If you fancy a change to your hair colour, choosing the right colour can be daunting. There are just so many choices! Here at Iconic we are passionate about finding the perfect hair colour for you and we would be delighted to offer a free consultation to discuss all your options. In the meantime, we have put together a quick guide to finding the right hair colour for your skin type. Of course, you can choose whatever hair colour you like, there is no reason why you can’t look fabulous with dark skin and blonde hair, but choosing the warmness and coolness of your hair colour depending on your own, unique skin tone is a great place to start.

What skin tone are you?

So how do you know what your skin tone is? There are a few different ways to work this out:

1.

Remove all makeup and wash your face and then wait a few minutes for your skin to settle down to its natural colour. Make sure you have a natural light source, sit by a window or go outside – artificial lightbulbs can have a yellow or green hue that can change the look of your skin tone. Grab a mirror and hold a white piece of paper next to your face. If your face appears yellow or sallow next to the paper you probably have a warm skin tone. If your face appears pink or bluey- red then you have a cooler skin tone. If you cannot determine a yellow or a pinkish hue then you more than likely have a neutral skin tone.

2.

Take a look at the veins on the inside of your wrist. If your veins appear green then you have a warm skin tone, if your veins appear blue then you have a cool skin tone. If you can’t tell either way, then you probably have a neutral skin tone.

3.

Think about how your skin reacts to the sun. As a general rule, if you tan easily and seldom burn then you have a warm skin tone. If you burn easily and tend not to tan then you have a cooler skin tone.

4.

Which do you prefer, gold jewellery or silver jewellery? Cool tones tend to suit silver and warm tones suit gold jewellery.

matching your skin tone to your hair colour

So now you have established whether you have a cool, warm or neutral skin tone you can now find the best hair colour for you. Warm skin tones will really glow when paired with a warm hair colour. Blonde colours such as a buttery beige or golden blonde look great and a brunette should be more of a caramel colour whereas reds should be coppery. Cool skin tones suit a platinum blonde or a dark chocolate brunette. If you find that you have both green and blue veins or you suit both gold and silver you may well be a neutral skin tone – good news, you suit most colours.

Hopefully this gives you an idea of where to start but if you still need some advice then we would be delighted to offer a free consultation on the best hair colour for you.

We can help you think about covering any greys and keeping your hair in fabulous condition in between visits to the salon.
